Hiking
For those wishing to enjoy more vigorous exercise than the gentle
bisses, all other routes affirm the fact that this is mountain
country. Steeper gradients, narrower paths (often quite
vertiginous!), and longer distances – there are hikes to suit
all abilities.
The most strenuous hikes are available over 250km of
summit paths. Self-guiding is popular for those familiar with
map-reading/using a compass, and experienced mountain guides can
be booked via the Hiking Office at
www.montagne-loisirs.ch
As the lift systems are open from late June to late
September, it is possible to attain good altitude (for example
Tracouet at 2200m, or Combatseline at 2100m) prior to commencing
a hike.
One must-do trip is to the glacier on Mont Fort, with
its extraordinary view of fifty 4,000m peaks including the
Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
